Turning Podcast Audio into Clean Transcripts — My Free Toolchain

podcast audio to clean transcripts

Podcast clients usually want three things from one episode: a transcript, show notes, and a social clip. The stacked tools to do all of that can run $50+/month. I do it with a free workflow that takes about as long as listening to the episode at 1.5×.

Start with a clean audio file

Garbage in, garbage out. Ask the client for a mono export at a decent bitrate, or extract the audio yourself. Noise reduction before transcription saves you an hour of cleanup later.

Transcribe, then fix names and numbers

Every transcription engine mangles proper nouns, product names, and figures. Budget real time for this pass — it’s the difference between a usable transcript and an embarrassing one. If the episode is in another language, run the output through a translation checker or a dedicated QA pass.

Turn the transcript into show notes

This is where a free summary generator earns its keep. Feed it the corrected transcript, get a tight summary, then add timestamps and links yourself. Clients love chapter markers; tools rarely nail them on their own.

Deliver three formats

  • Full transcript — plain text + a formatted doc
  • Show notes — summary, chapters, links
  • Clip suggestions — 2–3 timestamp ranges worth cutting

What actually takes the time

Not the transcription — the QA. The value you add as a freelancer is the judgment about what’s correct and what’s worth highlighting. Free tools handle the mechanical 80%; your attention handles the 20% that clients pay for.

The summary tool is free and browser-based — part of the free AI tools set. No signup, which matters when a client sends you a file at 11pm and wants notes by morning.
